What is Human Memory? And Its Types
What is Human Memory?
Human memory means "the ability whereby we retain everyday experiences ,observations and learning material in our mind and recall them when the need arises."
Hilgard Says:
"Remembering means to recall the previously learnt material".
According to Woodworth:
"Remembering or memory means to retain the thing or task learnt in the past".
What is Memory Process?
James Deese has proposed three stages of memory and term them memory process:
1:Encoding
2:Storage
3:Retrieval
Encoding:
when we classify perceptual experiences in our mind,it is called Encoding.
Storage:
At this stage, the acquired information is stored so that it may not be lost.It is termed storage.
Retrieval:
Retrieval means recalling the stored information and experiences in the same way.
Factors of Memory
The factor of memory are as follows:
1:Learning
2:Retention
3:Recall
4:Recognition
Learning:
It is the basic aspect of memory without which memory cannot be formed.Learning gets initial information that produce temporary or sensory memory. It is learning that enables an individual to convert his temporary memory into permanent memory by practice and repetition.
Retention:
The storing of experiences, events and learning material acquired by an individual is called retention. This stage preserve the learnt material.
Recall:
Recall means recollecting and bringing back to the mind the learnt material. At this stage, the material stored in the mind recalled in the same way as it was preserve in the mind.
Recognition:
Identifying the learnt material is known as recognition.Recall involves recollecting the material and recognition includes identifying it.
Types of Memory
There are two types of memory:
1:Short Term Memory (STM)
2:Long Term Memory(LTM)
Short Term Memory:
If the impressions transmitted by sensory register or store stay in the mind up to 20 seconds ,they are called Short Term Memory. This memory is temporary in nature.
If short term memory is not recalled, it vanished in the next 10 to 20 seconds . STM is consider to be the busiest center of memory.
Long Term Memory:
When events and experiences remain in the mind for a long time ,it is called Long Term Memory. This memory span minutes, days ,weeks, month, years or even whole life.
It is also called secondary memory. In this memory, material is stored in an organized way. This memory has unlimited storage capacity.
